THE EDITOR, Sir:I ENDORSE the sentiments expressed in the letter entitled 'Reach out and Save Someone' submitted by Snappy, and published in the February 17, 2005 issue of your paper.
I wish to recommend that we implement a suggestion made by our Public Defender, Howard Hamilton, some time ago: that each 'wealthy' community adopt a 'poor' community with a view to assisting the development of the latter communities.
The wealthy commumity could help to establish training institutions or even home-work centres in the poorer communities and help to place the unemployed in jobs. The poor community could also be engaged to do work for the wealthy community for fees such as landscaping, domestic work, messenger services etc. depending on the skills available.
The fact is that while we lament the unfairness of the economic system, and wait for the goverment to do more for the poor, little children in these less-fortunate communities are suffering daily, in squalid circumstances, without nutritious food and proper care in some cases.
By linking these communities and fostering the exchange of goods and services between them, our poor communities could find a way out of their difficult circumstances and the wealthy would have an opportunity to give back to the society. By such collaboration we could show that we are truly "out of many one people".
I am etc.,
