'Better governance needed in school'
published: Thursday | February 24, 2005

Rayon Dyer, Gleaner Writer

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

NOEL DACOSTA, President of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) has said that he believes that one area of weakness that contributes to the problem in our education system, is the governance of our schools.

He said that "we have school boards that are filled with people who, despite their good intentions, are not suited to those positions."

Mr. DaCosta made these comments while speaking at a recent awards banquet of the St. Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce at the Alpart Sports Club in Nain.

The JCC President has suggested to the Government, that among its membership islandwide, there are many successful business persons who are willing to apply the principles and techniques that made them successful to the running of schools.

Mr. DaCosta also challenged the members of the Chamber who were present to be of help with school governance by offering themselves to be members of the various school boards in the parish of St. Elizabeth.
