Man held in Sp Town car stealing ring
published: Thursday | February 24, 2005

HEAD OF the St. Catherine North Criminal Investigation Bureau, Acting Deputy Superinten-dent Meveral Smith and his team of detectives have put a dent on a multimillion-dollar car stealing ring, following the arrest of a 24-year-old man in the Kitson Town area of the parish on Monday.

Reports are that the police carried out a raid in the rural district on Monday, searching for rival gang members of Spanish Town, when they came across a Toyota Hiace bus, driven by Damion Fisher. The vehicle was searched and several parts from Honda Integra motor cars were discovered.

Mr. Fisher was subsequently charged in connection with the car parts, which were found to have been stolen. During their investigations, the lawmen went to an area in Kitson Town where they found the bodies of two Honda Integra motor cars.

The police said while they were interrogating Mr. Fisher, the investigator received a call from a man who offered a bribe of $150,000 for the police not to prosecute Mr. Fisher.

According to the police, the man became persistent and was apprehended during a sting operation. He turned up at an agreed destination with $70,000 to bribe the investigator. Arrested and charged with bribery is 29-year-old Michael Ranger of Kitson Town.

The police said over the years Kitson Town have become a safe haven for gang members who have fled Spanish Town in St. Catherine. Acting DSP Smith further said that Kitson Town is an area used by car thieves to conceal their loot.
