No more than $30 for toll
published: Thursday | March 10, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE been a resident of Portmore for 19 years, and I remember the times before the one-way system was implemented. You had to leave home from as early as 5:00 a.m. to get to work at 8:00 a.m. At the time I was attending a high school in Cross Roads which started at 7:45 a.m. If we didn't catch that 5:15 a.m. robot bus we knew we would be late for school. I am working now and thanks to the one-way system I can now leave home at 7:30 and reach work before 8:30.

I am one of few Portmore residents who are anxiously awaiting the new toll road. The one thing I have an issue with is the charge. Anything more than $30 will be too high for me to afford.

My suggestion to the government is that they leave the existing road as is and revert it to two-way traffic 24 hours per day, seven days per week. That way some residents of Portmore will have the continued use of the congested Causeway while others will have the option to use the toll road whenever they choose to. Also give responsibility of the old road to the Municipal Council.

One question, however, as it affects individuals that have to travel by public transport, where would the buses that use the Causeway drive? Would they use the toll road or be re-routed to the Mandela Highway?

I am, etc.,

ALTHEA COLE
