KC cruise to victory
published: Sunday | March 20, 2005

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

KINGSTON COLLEGE (KC) scored a runaway boys' victory while Holmwood Technical were poised to retain their girls' crown at the VMBS Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships at the National Stadium last night.

However, a sizzling champion-ships was marred by a crowd disturbance in the bleachers which saw fans run on to the track and infield and disrupt proceedings. It appeared at least one patron was injured during the disturbance.

After about 20 minutes, the police got things back to relative calm and the meet continued.

RUNAWAY WIN

At press time, KC (189 points) held an unassailable 61 points lead over Wolmer's (128). They were followed by St. Jago (127.5), Calabar (127) and Jamaica College (99.5).

The girls' section at that stage had Holmwood (247) in the lead ahead of Vere (242), St. Jago (182.5), Edwin Allen (166) and Manchester (142).

With only the mile relays to come, and tomorrow's re-run of the 400m hurdles, Holmwood were well on their way to a hat-trick of titles.

While the girls' race was heading down to the final event, the mile relay, KC on the boys' side had things covered from early.

Cawayne Jervis' victory in the 200m in 21.88 saw the North Street boys soar to 153 points, 30.5 points ahead of nearest rivals St. Jago (122.5) and 49 ahead of fourth-placed Calabar (104), who were tipped as KC's biggest threat.

On the girls' side, boosted by their late afternoon dominance on the track, Holmwood and Vere exchanged the lead on several occasions, however, many track and field experts called it for Holmwood from as early as the 200m.

Holmwood overtook Vere with three top place finishers in the 200m finals; however, Vere bounced back with second and third in the 3,000m to reclaim the lead.

HOLMWOOD SOAR AHEAD

At the end of the 200m finals, Holmwood soared ahead with three victories, one second and a third-place finish which took them to 207 over Vere's 203.

Leading the challenge for the girls from Christiana were sprint double winners, Petra Fanty, Schillonie Calvert and Anneisha McLaughlin and Holmwood looked to have Champs covered, barring any relay mishaps.

Fanty took yesterday's Class Four 200m in 25.35, Calvert took Class Two in 23.44 and McLaughlin Class One in 23.40, all adding to Friday's 100m victories.

Anastasia Le-Roy (23.53) and Nyoka Cole (24.33) were second and third respectively in Classes Two and One.
