Man convicted for policeman's murder
published: Thursday | March 24, 2005

A HOME Circuit Court jury on Tuesday convicted 26-year-old labourer, Garfield Campbell of the capital murder of 46-year-old Police Sergeant Glenston Hamilton.

The Crown, represented by Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn, led evidence that the policeman was shot and killed in the urinal at the Tropical Hut Bar, Alton Villa Road, Kingston, December 8, 1997.

On the day of the incident, Sergeant Hamilton, who was popularly called "Muff", took a police service vehicle to a garage on Orange Street, downtown Kings-ton, for repairs. He went to the bar to use the bathroom and while there he was shot and his gun stolen.

Campbell was subsequently arrested and charged with capital murder.

In his defence, he denied being in the area at the time when the policeman was shot.

Mr. Justice Basil Reid has put off sentencing until April 1.

Campbell, who was represented by attorney-at-law Michael Lorne, was being tried for the third time for the policeman's murder. On the other two occasions the juries failed to arrive at unanimous verdicts and retrials were ordered.
