Waterhouse in charge
published: Thursday | March 24, 2005

WATERHOUSE WILL go into the second-leg of the Red Stripe Champions' Cup with a 1-0 lead after beating Boys' Town in the first game of a two-way tie at Collie Smith Drive yesterday.

In a physical game, Boys' Town had the better of play until an unfortunate own goal gave Waterhouse a valuable edge.

Boys' Town's goalkeeper, Marvin Mundy, came valiantly for a long ball out of midfield but lost the handle on the delivery that fell to Waterhouse's Roberto Fletcher just outside of the 18-yard box.

Fletcher wasted no time in driving the ball toward the empty goal only to have it cleared off the line by Wavell Williams.

Fletcher's disgust soon turned to joy though as the clearance cannoned into Samaud Brown, who watched haplessly as the ball trickled over his goal line.

Boys' Town were undaunted by the setback and set about the task of creating opportunities for themselves. Those opportunities came in abundance, but to the dismay of their coach, Andrew Price, none counted.

GLIMMER OF HOPE

Meanwhile, two goals by Marvin Henry carried Rivoli United to a 3-1 win over Wadadah at the Spanish Town Prison Oval. Henry opened the scoring in the 14th minute and three minutes later Omar Gordon doubled Rivoli's lead before Henry popped up to give the home team a comfortable 3-0 cushion in the 65th minute.

But Daniel Ricketts, scored a scorcher from 30 metres to reduce the deficit in the 87th minute and give the MoBay-based team a glimmer of hope in the return leg at Jarrett Park on April 6.

Western Confederation team Sandy Bay created the upset of the third round when they took a 2-0 lead over National Premier League team Village United in their game played at the Kenilworth Grounds in Hanover.

Melvin Donalds in the 43rd minute and Sidney Riggan from the penalty spot in the 66th minute gave the Hanover team a big lead going into next Wednesday's return leg game which will be played at the Elliston Wakeland Centre. The score line could have been wider had the struggling Confederation League team taken their chances, especially in the second half, but Village had only themselves to blame.

Village dominated the first half and despite trailing 1-0 at halftime still looked much the better team, keeping the home team in their own half for long periods and forcing several corners.
