THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE ACT of blocking the phone service by the cellular providers has absolutely no effect on the thieves. All it does is help to further inconvenience the already distressed victims.
The two major players in the cellphone business must stop paying lip service to customers.
There have been a number of fatalities resulting from cellphone theft and this can be nipped in the bud right now.
It would be far more effective if Digicel and C&W to refuse to sell SIM cards willynilly to any buyer until s(he) can provide proof of purchase which must have been previously registered with either company, even if the unit was originally a gift.
Life is much more valuable than any corporation's bottom line. Cellular phone grabbing is not limited to Jamaica as warnings are plastered all over Victoria Station in London, England, for instance, for people to be on the lookout.
But they also have redress through insurance from the cell hone providers if stolen or lost.
Why isn't that copied as one of the 'firsts' in the region instead of making a mockery of West Indies Cricket a 'first' between the two companies?
I am, etc.,
