THE EDITOR, Sir:I WOULD like to say thanks to members of the Hanover Fire Department for their prompt response to a call for assistance in fighting a bush fire which was very close to some homes in Kendal.
Amidst all the bashing we see them getting on television, we were tempted not to call as no residence was actually on fire.
The fact, however, is that a call was placed to the fire department at approximately 9:02pm and at exactly 9:19p.m. the truck arrived. This journey usually takes approximately 25 minutes by car as the area is remote.
There is no piped water close to the houses that were threatened.
The truck could not get close enough to the fire but the fire-fighters were gracious enough to fill containers to be poured on the fire.
We did not get the names of the officers that actually came out but would like to encourage them to keep on doing their duty even though the society has become so thankless and keeps bashing them.
I am beginning to wonder now if sometimes when they are blamed for responding too late, it is as a result of residents delaying too much before calling them. Just a thought.
I am, etc.,
