THE EDITOR, Sir:
I MUST admit that I am neither a dancehall fan nor a calypso fan, so my argument is from a point of neutrality. On April 3, 2005, I sat around my TV set some time after 5:00 p.m. watching Oprah's interview with Christopher Reeve's wife on CVM. I was really enthralled by the level of devotion this woman showed her husband. The programme was interrupted to show carnival. I thought it was a temporary break and so I sat there awaiting the restart of my programme.
I heard one of the MCs inviting one of the bmobile-sponsored artistes Beenie Man on the stage. I was shocked at his utterances about gay people and other people's sexual tastes being broadcast on public television at minutes to 6:00 p.m. family time. Bounty Killer followed and did the same thing.
These guys must remember that they were invited to be a part of carnival; it was not a dancehall event. If they are upset about certain moral issues, this was not the place and certainly fighting immorality with immorality is not the answer. No apology can be accepted for what these role models did! We need to uplift ourselves and not associate with this obvious level of mediocrity.
Oh, CVM, you should have continued the interview with Mrs. Reeves. We need more inspiration like this.
I am, etc.,
