BOTTOM OF the barrel claimers ($140,000) hold centre stage at Caymanas Park today in the Dr. David 'Jack' Radix Memorial Cup feature to be contested by 12 starters over 1820 metres.
Twelve, rather than 16, is the maximum number allowed to start in circular nine races owing to the proximity of the starting gate to the clubhouse turn.
In what promises to be a keenly contested race, the main hopefuls are FLASHING LYNDA, MYBLUBELLE, JACK DE FREAK, LADY KAMPOOR, FIASCO and UNWANTED.
All of the above are ideally suited to this circular course and while the winner will more than likely emerge from this group, I would not be surprised to see a horse like MASS JOE putting in a strong late effort.
The Patrick Fong-trained MYBLUBELLE will have her share of supporters with jockey Orville Beckford, who won aboard her back on January 8, again in the saddle.
On that occasion, MYBLUBELLE ran on well to beat LADY PHAEDRA and subsequent winner DOUBLE BUCK over 1600 metres in decisive fashion. Despite failing to follow up in two subsequent races, MYBLUBELLE was not disgraced when finishing six lengths fourth to JACK DE FREAK over 1800 metres on March 2 when trained by Lazel Khwalsingh.
MYBLUBELLE was claimed by her old trainer (Fong) that day and back with the man who knows her best, is coming to run.
Today, MYBLUBELLE renews rivalry with JACK DE FREAK on 3kg better terms and it should be close between them this time around.
JACK DE FREAK subsequently lost to out-of-class NAVIGATOR over 1600 metres on Easter Monday, but suffered interference at the start and lost nothing in defeat when finishing five lengths second under top weight of 57kg. With no NAVIGATOR around, JACK DE FREAK from the in-form stables of Rowan Mathie can definitely go one better, even though heading the handicaps.
Strictly at the weights, however, the one best equipped to pull it off must be the Barrington Rambally-trained LADY KAMPOOR who advertised her well being on Saturday when a fast-finishing second to PROCEEDACCORDINGLY over 1200 metres, a distance short of her best.
Outpaced in the backstretch, LADY KAMPOOR closed 10 lengths up the lane to finish a mere length away in second.
Back in action over her pet trip with in-form apprentice Andron Findley aboard, the eight-year-old mare will not go down easily from the convenient mark of 50.5kg. I am expecting her to oufinish JACK DE FREAK and MYBLUBELLE leaving the furlong pole for a decisive win.
Other firm fancies on the card are the impressive American colt CLOCK WORK to make it four in a row in the first race over 1200m, EAGLE COMMANDER in the second, the unbeaten WICKY WACKY to make it two in a row in the fourth, KERMIT over PLEASANT WOOD in the seventh and GILNOCK to turn the tables on recent conqueror REJECT in the ninth race for high claimers.
