THE PORTMORE Municipality Council has established its first park, named 'The Josh Morgan Municipal Park' at Patricia Avenue in Edgewater.
Built on community land under the municipality's beautification programme, and launched in July 2004, the facility was officially opened on Monday at a
ceremony held on the roadside next to the park. The event was one of many activities planned by the council to celebrate Portmore Week 2005.
"Right now, I feel very emotional to see that something that he started has come to reality. I didn't know this would really happen," said Theresa Morgan, after unveiling a sign in the park dedicated to her husband, Joshua Emanuel Morgan, a resident of Edgewater who died in September 2001.
Mrs. Morgan said her husband began planting coconut and palm trees about 15 years ago in the park, which had been barren land and a dumping ground for some residents.
"He loved nature. He was a fisherman and loved to go fishing, so he loved nature, and I think that is why he took on the park single handedly," she said.
Mrs. Morgan said after her husband died, she, along with other residents helped to clean the park and donated cash for persons to assist in the clearing of bushes and other debris.
Mayor of Portmore George Lee said the park is developed in honour of Josh Morgan because of his selfless attitude and dedication towards the development of a park. "What Josh Morgan exemplifies was his selfless
community spirit. Day after day, I passed this park and saw him working alone, tirelessly, but always had the vision that he would build a park for his community," he said.
