Students participate in UN Model Assembly
published: Thursday | April 28, 2005

MORE THAN 1,000 students are expected to converge on the Jamaica Conference Centre today, to participate in the annual United Nations Model Assembly.

A popular event on the school calendar, it is hosted by the United Nations Association of Jamaica, and will see 95 local educational institutions represent member states of the United Nations.

Dr. Lucille Buchanan, president of the United Nations Association of Jamaica, said that the event has been around for 30 years and that last year it was cancelled due to Hurricane Ivan.

This year the moot is, 'Peaceful coexistence among the world's nations is possible, not tenuous', and the guest speaker will be the Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Delano Franklyn.

Prizes include a trophy for the winning school, donated by Pepsi Cola; a trip to the United States donated by Air Jamaica for second-place, and a trip sponsored by BWIA to a Caribbean destination for third-place.

Defending champions, Immaculate Conception High will seek to retain their hold on the trophy.
