Country under siege!
published: Friday | May 6, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHERE IS Jamaicans for Justice? Where is Amnesty International?

Criminal elements have declared war on our security forces and it does not matter either that there might be civilian casualties in this war.

Hardworking, tax-paying citizens of this country are paying for facilities they cannot access because of self-imposed curfews brought on by the overrun of criminals.

What of our rights? We fool ourselves into thinking that this is a civil society and we can therefore take on the entrapments of First World countries, talking about 'state terrorism' and 'human rights' which seem to translate into rights for (not of) criminals, than rights for those who are the backbone of this country.

This is not a civil society, and the sooner we come to this realisation and put the necessary means in place, as unpopular as they may be, to deal with criminals, we will never become a civil society to enjoy the luxury of civil discussions on human rights issues.

Tax-paying citizens of this country are under siege by criminals, while the security forces are under siege by myopic civil groups.

We need to go to war, since war has been declared. The security forces should not stand by and be ambushed in this manner. They must be pre-emptive in their strike against those who seek to destroy the country.

We need to wake up to the truth and reality of our situation.

Every day, this country is sliding further and further into the abyss and all that we get from our leaders are occasional words of condemnation and outrage at another gruesome killing and promises to pay for the funeral, while the rest of us wait to die.

I am, etc.,

CAROLYN GRAHAM
