Sagicor to finance nutrition competitions
published: Friday | May 6, 2005

THE CARIBBEAN Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) and Sagicor, parent company of Life of Jamaica (LoJ) signed a memorandum of understanding which will see the company financing two CFNI nutrition competitions for three years.

The signing took place recently at the president's office at the LoJ Centre in New Kingston. A cheque valued at US$18,000, which represents the first year of financing, was also presented to CFNI.

Ivan Carter, senior vice-president of finance at LoJ who presented the cheque, said that Sagicor was proud to be a sponsor of CFNI's nutrition programme.

'ENCOURAGING'

In accepting the cheque, Dr. Fitzroy Henry, director of CFNI, said he was pleased to collaborate with Sagicor and that such partnership would go well to promote nutrition.

"It is very encouraging because we have (had) these competitions for the past seven years and it is the first time we have had anyone committing to the programmes for three years," said Dr. Henry.

The money will be used to finance the Caribbean School Nutrition Quiz and the Caribbean Nutrition Promotions Awards competitions, which are held annually.

The aims of the competitions are to improve the image of food and nutrition in the region; promoting nutrition and healthy lifestyle among students and the community; providing visibility to exemplary food and nutrition projects; and promoting regional sharing of food and nutrition information.
