Wake-up call for all
published: Tuesday | May 10, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

KINDLY GRANT me permission to vent my utter disgust and outrage at the spate of killings in Jamaica, particular in the recent, brazen killings of two of our island's security guards and three police officers! This should be a wake-up call for all of us, local or abroad, who can assist in the fight against crime and sit on our laurels and do nothing about it.

Those of us who know where these warmongers are located and their regular points of 'communion' and assault launching pad, should furnish these bits of information to the law enforcement crews immediately. Those of us who provide haven for these murderers and lumpens should be treated equally as the perpetrators of these crimes themselves.

Each Jamaican should be proactive in seeking the eradication of crime and criminality in our country. We, at the same time, must continue to support the work the security forces are endeavouring to accomplish. In addition, we must ask ourselves, when did we reach to this stage and what could have led to this outrageous madness?

I am terribly nervous of the situation as it obtains in my country today. I am planning to visit my country in August for a college reunion and to take my seven-year-old son to see his roots, but I am scared to death! Please Jamaica, we need to suffocate crime by the neck now and allay the fears of Jamaicans at home and abroad and foreigners who would love to enjoy our natural facilities. Please act now, before it's too late.

I am, etc.,
