MORE THAN 190 youths have benefited from training in the Jamaica 4-H Club's Tractor Operation and Maintenance Programme, as the organisation continues to promote the involvement of youths in the agricultural sector.
Senator Norman Grant,
chairman of the Jamaica 4-H Club, said 10 batches, consisting of 19 persons, have so far
completed training under the programme, which is funded by a $2.9 million donation from the Japanese Government. The programme is done at the club's training centre in Denbigh, Clarendon.
"Approximately 11 per cent of these young people are placed in jobs through the 4-H Club. The remaining number has managed to find jobs on their own," Senator Grant said.
He said 114 persons had so far been trained under the home economics training programme since its inception in 2001, while another 150 persons have received training in the information technology training programme.
However, as the 4-H Club seeks to broaden its scope, Senator Grant said it was aiming to increase the number of
persons trained under the citrus production programme.
"We will be intensifying the participation of young people in this programme, as we recognise it as a long-term contributor to the agricultural sector," he said.
