Sizzling Powell for 200m dash

Several top Jamaican stars will be in action at today's Felix Sánchez Invitational track and field meeting in the Dominican Republic.

Heading the Jamaican contingent is speedster Asafa Powell, fresh from his world leading 100m time of 9.84 seconds, which is the fastest time since Tim Montgomery's world record run of 9.78 in 2002.

Overall, it is the third fastest time ever as American Maurice Greene's previous world standard stood at 9.79.

However, this time, Powell will start in the men's 200, where he has a personal best of 20.06 seconds.

Besides Powell, world rated high jumper Germaine Mason will make his long anticipated comeback.

sidelined

Mason, (who has been sidelined for over a year), Olympic Games sprint relay gold medallists Sherone Simpson and Aleen Bailey, along with Dean Griffiths, Brigitte Foster-Hylton, sprint hurdler Suzan Dickerson and sprinter Sherika Williams, are the other Jamaican athletes who will run in Santo Domingo.

Commenting on Mason's comeback, coach, Stephen Francis said: "He (Mason) is healthy and ready to go."

Francis said Mason will not be under any pressure to jump too high.

"I don't think we going to try higher than 2.15m, and take it from there. He has already qualified for the World Champion-ships from his indoor performances last year," added Francis.

"I expect by the trials (Jamaica National Track and Field Championships) he should go 2.20s-2.30s," Francis said.

100 m hurdles

Simpson will run in the women's 200m, while Foster-Hylton will face Olympic champion Joanna Hayes and clubmate Suzan Dickerson in the 100m hurdles.

Griffiths runs in the 400m hurdles, Williams is set to start in the 400m while Bailey will run in either the 100m or 200m.
