... IF YOU'RE STARTING FROM SCRATCH
published: Tuesday | May 17, 2005

Flowers to create a lush outdoors space. Remeber that not all plants do well in full sun. Keep this in mind when deciding where in your garden to plant flowers.

Decide what you want to do with the space you have. Have a mental picture of how you want the finished product to look. You can get ideas from the many home and garden magazines out there.

The location of your garden/lawn is very important in choosing the type of plant you will be able to use. If it's in the front yard and exposed to direct sunlight then it's important that you choose your flowers wisely as some do better than others in direct sunlight.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Machete and garden hoe

Topsoil

Flower and plant fertiliser

Wood chips for mulch

Flowerpots

Flowers.

Spray paint.

FLOWER AND LAWN CARE

1. If you plant roses, keep in mind that they require a lot of care and attention.

2. Replace wood chip every few months as they do dry out and lose their colour.

3. You can't prevent weed from invading your lawn so maintenance is important. Weed killer can be used but weeds do grow back so maintenance is essential.

4. Get fertiliser for lawn and flowers. However, do not over fertilise, that will burn your plants and flowers.

5. Water your plants and lawn.

6. Use a regular maintenance programme if you don't have a regular gardener in terms of pruning and watering. Get advice on a maintenance programme from the nursery and follow that regime.

7. If you decide to get potted plants remember that some have to be transplanted into the soil while others can be trained to stay in the pots.
