Lockdown looms - Businesses in May Pen to close for several hours today
published: Thursday | May 19, 2005

THE BUSINESS district in May Pen, Clarendon is expected to be shut down today between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in what the town's business sector is calling a show of solidarity in the fight against crime.

Business operators in Old Harbour, St. Catherine are also reportedly planning to join in the show of unity, by closing the doors to their businesses for a few hours today. The decision by Old Harbour business operators to join the lockdown followed a meeting of the group on Monday.

BRUTAL ATTACK

Plans for today's proposed action were first announced by the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce on Sunday, following a brutal attack the night before on prominent businessmen Maurice Azan and Lloyd Phang. The two were shot at their business place in May Pen. Both men later died.

Yesterday, Aldo Brown, acting president, of the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce said all was set for today's lockdown. He said the chamber has received islandwide support for the shutdown. He noted that the support was overwhelming and by all accounts he expected the lockdown to be well supported.
