THE POLICE and officers of the Financial Investigative Division early yesterday morning completed the count of millions of dollars in foreign and local currencies that were found at an uptown house owned by well-known Matthews Lane strongman Donald 'Zekes' Phipps.
Sources close to the investigations confirmed that the lawmen counted over $18 million in cash J$10 million, US$100,000, and £9,000.
The money was reportedly found in a safe at a house in Havendale, St. Andrew.
Police sources say they acquired the service of a locksmith to open the safe in the presence of Phipps' family members.
The Sunday Gleaner understands that the investigators have completed their interviews with Phipps in relation to two murders committed in the Matthews Lane area of Kingston. Questioning in relation to the cash, among other things, will continue this week.
Phipps has been in police custody since last Wednesday but is yet to be charged in connection with any crime. He was arrested after leaving the Half-Way Tree Resident Magistrate's Court where he had gone to answer charges of illegal possession of 26 rounds of ammunition, pharmaceuticals and possession of two pounds of marijuana.
