A WET pitch held up the Supreme Ventures Super Cup match between hosts Kingston and Melbourne for almost two hours at Sabina Park yesterday.
The incident brought back memories of abandoned Test match between West Indies and England seven years ago.
Reports are that the sprinklers close to the pitch came on overnight, seeped under the covers and onto the pitch, thus causing play to begin at 11:47 a.m. almost two hours after the scheduled 10 a.m. start.
Home team Kingston were penalised for the late start, thus giving up 52 penalty runs.
In addition to the loss of the penalty runs because of the late start, they also had to give up the toss and paid dearly after being sent to bat by Melbourne.
Left-arm pacer Leon Bent had a field day, as he ran through his opponent's batting by taking seven for 54 off 17.4 overs in Kingston's 114.
SUPPORTED HIM
Marlon Samuels supported him with 3-32 as only Nehemiah Perry, 39 not out, lastman Audley Sanson, 16, Duran White, 14, and Omar Hamilton, 12, were able to reach double figures.
In reply, Melbourne closed on 96 for one, 21 short of first innings honours.
At Kirkvine, Manchester secured the day's only first innings victory.
Replying to St. Mary's 112 of which Maurice Clarke got 25 against Andre Dwyer (4-24), Manchester were 144 for four at the close.
RETIRED HURT
Cory Phillips retired hurt on 45 while Jamaica Youth player Ziggy Levy is on 22.
At Nelson Oval, St. Elizabeth also benefited from 52 penalty runs as wet areas around the pitch contributed to a late start.
Sent to bat, Lucas who were at one stage struggling on 34 for six, recovered to score 159.
Gary Herbine, 39, and Junior McKenzie, 33, who added 66 for the seventh wicket, led the way for Lucas against Wayne Simpson (3-35), Howard Powell (3-38) and Alton Beckford (2-45).
St. Elizabeth will resume on 103.
At Up Park Camp, JDF and St. Catherine are locked in a keen battle for first innings points.
