50 projects strong for Clarendon Labour Day
published: Monday | May 23, 2005

George Henry, Gleaner Writer

SPALDINGS, Clarendon:

OVER 50 projects have been registered with the Clarendon Labour Day secretariat for Labour Day activities throughout the parish.

Mrs. Grandlin Fearon, who assists in co-coordinating the registration of projects at the Clarendon Parish Council office, said the Labour Day committee has decided to undertake the repair of the New Bowens Community Centre, which is a registered shelter with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), as the parish project this year.

She added that all 22 councillors at the parish council have identified at least one main project in their division and that some have identified up to four to be undertaken on the day.

MINISTRY CONTRIBUTION

Mrs. Fearon noted that she was, however, disappointed that some of the projects being registered are not in line with this year's theme, 'Prepare for Disaster, Recover Faster', but said much effort is being made to have projects done in all areas.

She disclosed that the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture has made a contribution of $100,000 towards work to be undertaken in Clarendon today.

Meanwhile, Mayor of May Pen, Milton Brown, who is also chairman of the Labour Day committee, said all is in place for most of the projects to be undertaken.

He told The Gleaner that some amount of funding had been received from at least one private body in the parish and that if all goes well the day should turn out to be a success.

Mayor Brown disclosed that Jamalco has contributed $25,000 towards the parish project at New Bowens in south-east Clarendon and another sum towards work, which will be undertaken close to the plant at Halse Hall. The alumina company has also donated $120,000 to assist with projects in the constituency.

Mayor Brown disclosed that the New Bowens project was chosen by the Parish Committee as effort is being made to set up facilities like those across the parish to be used as shelters during times of disaster and to move away from utilising as much of the schools as is possible, due to damage caused 'when these institutions are used'.
