St Thomas Parish Council gets ultimatum from residents
published: Wednesday | May 25, 2005

ST. THOMAS:

RESIDENTS OF Yallahs and its environs have given the St. Thomas Parish Council three months to have the markets in the town square back in operation.

During the parish consultations hosted by the St. Thomas Parish Council at the Yallahs Primary School last Tuesday, residents served notice on the council and the current leassee of the market - the Paul Bogle Foundation (PBF) - that they are not prepared to wait beyond August 17 for the resumption of trading activities at the Yallahs market.

The Yallahs market was ordered closed in 1997 by the health department for, among other things, inadequate lighting and rodent infestation. Since then, no fewer than five entities have operated the market, all of whom, residents claim, have come up short on management.

The residents are adamant that prompt action must be taken to reopen the market in order to enable vendors to have a sustained livelihood and to provide proper facilities to consumers.
