A POLICEMAN IS to serve 12 years imprisonment for manslaughter arising from the death of his landlord's brother who was severely chopped and kicked in the head a few days after the landlord took the policeman to court.
The policeman, Weston Gregory, 35, had 15 years service in the force and was attached to the Mandeville Police Station at the time of his arrest in 2003.
Gregory was charged with the murder of Theophilus Clarke, farmer, of Kendal, Manchester but the jury found him guilty of the lesser offence.
Mr. Justice Mahadev Dukharan who presided at the trial in the Manchester Circuit Court had put off sentencing until last week Friday in the Home Circuit Court.
15 DAYS TO QUIT
Witnesses testified at the trial that Constable Gregory rented an apartment at Kendal but in 2003, his landlord took him to court. The Resident Magistrate gave Gregory 15 days to quit and deliver up possession of the apartment.
On October 31, 2003, Clarke and his brother who was the landlord were at the premises talking with each other. Gregory came out of his apartment and used a knife to stab Clarke in the back. The landlord ran and Gregory used a machete to chop Clarke several times all over his body. When Clarke fell to the ground, Weston kicked him several times in the head. The police were summoned and when they arrived they saw Gregory kicking Clarke in the head. Clarke died as a result of injuries to the head.
Gregory said in his defence that he was in his room when the landlord, his brother and another person attacked him and chopped him on his hand . He said he and the deceased struggled on the ground but he could not say how the deceased received the injuries
