The battle for promotional spots heats up
published: Wednesday | June 8, 2005

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

SEBA UNITED travel to Star Cosmos while Los Perfectos host Boys' Town as the push for the two National Premier League (NPL) promotional spots intensifies between the four teams today.

Seba, of Montego Bay, lead the pack with the maximum six points followed by Manchester's Los Perfectos on three, with Kingston's Boys' Town and Star Cosmos of St. Mary on one point each after two rounds.

Seba, who last played in the top league in 2004, look set for a speedy return after securing 3-1 and 2-1 victories over Boys' Town and Los Perfectos respectively, and will be hunting their third straight win.

A win for the Paul 'Tegat' Davis-led MoBay outfit would put them in an almost impregnable position with the return games to come.

Seba will be looking towards Wilfred Smith, the Western Confederation's leading marksman with more than 30 goals, Iton Scott, Omar Reid, Damion Williams, veteran Norman Foster, captain Seion McNish and goalkeeper Alrick Henry to lead them to victory.

NO PUSHOVERS

However, Star Cosmos will be no pushovers as coach Donovan Duckie believes his team has been unfortunate in their two matches to date against Los P and Boys' Town.

"In the first match, there was a lot of rain and the Los P team had better footwear. We had no pegs and we gave up two soft goals including an own goal and a penalty in which the 'keeper was red-carded. Then we missed a penalty," noted Duckie.

And against Boys' Town, Duckie was left to rue the missed chances and three valuable points.

Star Cosmos, who last played in the 2003 NPL season, will be relying on Andre Lawson, the top striker in the Eastern Confederation, Leighton McDonald, formerly of Reno, Kirk Edwards and goalkeeper Adrian Williams to kick-start their promotional campaign.

Over at Brooks Park, Manchester, the home team Los P, with veteran coach, Bradley Stewart, will be hoping to take advantage of their home turf and secure full points from Boys' Town.

CAPABLE BUNCH

Los P, who have been out of the top league since 1991, showed that they are a capable bunch, losing on penalties to Arnett Gardens in the All-Island Red Stripe Champions Cup Knockout over two legs.

The yellow and purple-clad Manchester team will be looking towards Errol Wilkie, formerly of Rivoli, Angello Tulloch, formerly of Reno, Cleon Barrett, Leighton Wright, formerly of Hazard (Portmore United), Chad Hendricks and Neil Lynch.

But Boys' Town will be coming full throttle for three points and, after just gathering only one point from two games, could give Los P a torrid time.

Captain Fitzroy Anglin, the only surviving member the last time Boys' Town played in the Premier League, will again be leading from the front after been asked to play up front because of an injury to the speedy Michael Campbell.

He should get good support from the lanky Oneil Thompson, Troy Dawes, Jermaine Bailey, Andrew Wheeler, Wavel Williams and goalkeeper Marvin Mundy.
