WESTERN BUREAU:

THE CONSTRUCTION of the multi-million dollar Harmony Cove Resort in Trelawny is moving closer to reality as within the next two weeks the developers will be determined.

Managing director of the Development Bank of Jamaica, Kingsley Thomas, made the announcement at a Gleaner Editors' Forum held at Rock, Trelawny on Tuesday.

"Seven bids were received and of that number, Harmonisation Limited is now intensively scrutinising the best two. However, Harmonisation Limited could decide to undertake the infrastructure development," said Mr. Thomas, who is also a director of Harmonisation Limited, proposers of the project.

"We received about 67 expressions of interest. We are down to discussions with two companies. The decision will be made shortly as to whether any of these proposals meet what we call the benchmark minimum mark in terms of what we see as the value of that property," said Mr. Thomas.

Prime Minister P.J. Patterson announced the US$1.2 billion dollar project in his 2004 budget presentation.

The Harmony Cove development will be carried out on 1,400 acres of land in Trelawny. It will comprise four thousand rooms, three luxury hotels, two golf courses, three boutiques among other facilities.

Meanwhile, there are also plans to develop an international airport or guest-port in Braco Trelawny for the exclusive servicing of guests of Harmony Cove. This, according to Mr. Thomas would result in greater returns from the development.
