Shelter numbers plummet
published: Tuesday | July 12, 2005

THE OFFICE of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has reported that the number of persons in shelters islandwide had decreased to just 318.

This, the agency noted, was a significant decline from the nearly 3,000 persons who had been staying in shelters since last Friday, after Hurricane Dennis doused torrential rainfall on eastern parishes.

Nadene Newsome, director of information and training at ODPEM, said that 11 shelters were still open in the parishes of St. Mary, Clarendon, St. Thomas, Portland, Kingston and St. Andrew.

She said some 210 persons were in shelters in St. Thomas, 15 in Clarendon, 17 in Portland, 69 in Kingston and St. Andrew, and seven in St. Mary.

Meanwhile, the ODPEM is continuing its delivery of food items to shelters.
