'Act of racism'
published: Wednesday | July 13, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM surprised that an educated person of Chinese ancestry should use such derogatory terms about other Jamaicans of Chinese origin. The term CHINEY in quotes or not is just not acceptable in these times when we should be more sensitive to the racial question.

Rev. "Dick" owes Jamaicans of all colours an apology for this blatant act of racism, which in some countries like Canada he could be sued or prosecuted for.

I do hope that this is taken in the right spirit, as I in no way wish to insult the godly gentleman, but rather to bring to the fore a problem that is very annoying and troublesome to all of us of Chinese origin. Even when we smile at the use of the term, we are simply being polite, and underneath we are really saying, 'Oh no, you didn't!'

I am, etc.,
