THE FOUR policemen who have been charged in connection with a car-stealing ring were each granted bail in the sum of $750,000 with sureties when they appeared yesterday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
They are Constables André Williams and Nicholas Haynes who are attached to the Motorised Division; Kevron Williams, attached to Organised Crime, and Floyd Hutchinson attached to Mobile Reserve. They are to return to court on September 6 when the case will be mentioned.
The bail applications were made by attorneys-at-law Hugh Thompson, Tom Tavares-Finson, Patrick Bailey and Peter Champagnie.
SURRENDERED DOCUMENTS
Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle, in granting the policemen bail, ordered that a stop order be placed on them, so they cannot leave the island and they are also to surrender their travel documents.
Haynes is to report to the Nain Police Station in St. Elizabeth on a daily basis, while the other men are to report to other police stations three times per week.
CHARGED LAST MONTH
The policemen were charged last month in connection with the alleged car-stealing racket. André Williams is charged with three counts of conspiracy to steal motor cars and three counts of receiving stolen motor cars. Haynes is charged with two counts of receiving stolen motor cars, while Hutchinson is charged with receiving a motor car knowing it to have been stolen. Kevron Williams is charged with conspiracy to steal motor cars.
It is being alleged that the policemen were part of a car-stealing ring involving Honda motor cars. It is alleged that the motor cars were stolen, the chassis numbers removed and fraudulent documents were prepared for the motor
vehicles. One of the motor cars, which was allegedly found in possession of one of the policemen, was reported stolen in May, 2004.
