Carib parliaments and the Internet
published: Wednesday | July 20, 2005

Sandor Panton of Top5Jamaica.Com, in association with The Gleaner Online, guides you through what's new, cool and interesting on the Internet. From Jamaica to the wider Caribbean and the rest of the World, this is the 'Week on the Web'.

A RECENT article in The Gleaner stated that Jamaica's Parliamentarians now have access to the Worldwide Web, following the installation of a high-speed Internet connection at Gordon House. Both the Government and Opposition caucus rooms at Parliament are also now equipped with special Internet access devices.

TOP 3 SUGGESTED URLS

As we take the important baby steps towards improved efficiency and true e-Government through the use of the Internet, let's hope the facilities will be used and used well. My top 3 suggested URLs for Jamaica's parliamentarians are:

1) http://news.google.com - if they search regularly for 'e-government', they will be able to see what their peers worldwide are doing in that area

2) http://www.clickz.com/stats/ - where they can view global trends and statistics that are relevant and specific to all types of industries, business sectors; especially since these trends and statistics will eventually become applicable to Jamaican scenarios

3) http://www.blogger.com - who will be the first Jamaican Parliamentarian or active politician to start an online blog? So many people would be interested in the 'method behind the madness'!

THE GOVERNMENT'S E-GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES

Elsewhere in the Caribbean, proceedings in the U.S. Virgin Islands Senate are to be broadcast in real time over the Internet through the official website of a radio station there; more - http://www.wiuj.com.

The official website of the Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology has a dedicated page of links to a number of their current and ongoing E-Government initiatives - http://www.mct.gov.jm/mcst_ egov.htm

WEBSITES OF THE WEEK

http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com - This is the official website of a Linux and networking guide for students, I.T. professionals and others. Authored by a U.S.-based Jamaican, Peter Harrison, the book's title is the 'Linux Quick Fix Notebook' and was published for the first time this year by Prentice Hall.

http://www.reggaesumfest.com - Reggae Sumfest starts next week and the official website for this annual event has been updated with full details of the confirmed artistes for each night.
