Champion Simpson stars with three-timer

YESTERDAY'S MID-WEEK programme at Caymanas Park was highlighted by champion jockey Trevor Simpson who rode three winners from nine rides to widen his lead over closest rival Brian Harding.

After failing to raise a hair aboard hot favourite CRIMSON MAGIC in the first race over 1820 metres, Simpson quickly made amends with an easy victory aboard 6-5 favourite MEDICAL REPORT in the next race over the straight five course.

As the meet progressed, the five-time champion jockey ticked off two more winners - the two-year-old debutante FIRE WORKS, who looked impressive in the fifth race over 800 metres straight, and Dwight Chen's American filly SEATTLE'S GIRL, who made most in the day's overnight allowance feature over 1500 metres.

Installed a 3-2 second favourite, SEATTLE'S GIRL won by a length from the fast-finishing SATISFIER (9-2) as the 6-5 favourite SIT O (outpaced) closed late for third. SWEET SOUTHERNGAL and SHOW N' TELL were declared late non-starters, reducing the field to seven.

Simpson thus pushed his season's tally to 45 - eight clear of Harding who failed to ride a winner on the 11-race programme.

MULLINGS' 100TH

Apprentice Oneil Mullings rode two good-priced winners on the card in THE SAIL (made most) at 7-1 for trainer Arnold Rambally Jr. in the sixth race for maiden three-year-olds and PADDY STORM (a chance ride) at huge odds of 43-1 for trainer Robert Taylor in the eighth over 1200 metres.

THE SAIL provided Mullings with the 100th winner of his career. He has been riding since November 2002 and his apprenticeship is due to end this November.

Fellow 2002 Jockeys' School graduate Kerry-Gayl Robinson also had a good-priced winner in EXCLUSIVELY at 13-1 in the ninth race over the straight course, the bay filly closing rapidly in the last furlong to catch long-time leader and 4-5 favourite ROOM FORTYNINE within shades of the wire.
