Lend the money for education
published: Saturday | July 23, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FOR HIS views not to amend the National Housing Trust Act I find myself agreeing with Mr. Bruce Golding for the first time. If the Government keeps on borrowing from Peter to help Paul, then Paul might never help himself.

The money in the National Housing Trust account is for that purpose only. I am now living in the U.S. but I contributed to the Housing Trust before migrating. I now have family members there who would like to own a home and I want to sign over my share to a family member. I think that my money should be used to help find affordable housing.

A nation that cannot help its people to find a decent home, work, or put food on the table is a sorry nation. Please, Mr. Prime Minister, get it together. Accounting is accounting and nothing else. Lend the money for education and let education eventually pay that money back in some way shape or form.

BUYING A HOME

When I lived in Jamaica I couldn't find a decent job to help my poor mother, and we couldn't afford a home of our home. Now that I am here in the U.S. I own my home through FHA and HUD and that is their sole purpose, to help a low-income family to buy a home.

Please do the right thing and I assure you that Jamaica will be on the path to becoming a better place. Who knows, crime might decrease if people can believe in themselves again.

I am, etc.,

C. HYLTON
