Wake up, Jamaica!
published: Thursday | July 28, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS OUR women prepare for the upcoming Million Woman March, my heart is filled with joy. My heart is filled with joy because the planning of the event shows that our women are willing to organise.

However, the march will be meaningless if it turns out to be a march merely for exercise rather than a march for freedom, justice, and equality.

STAND UP

Keeping in mind the poor state of our economy, we have no more time for sleeping. It is time for us to stand up and begin serious business. Wake up, Jamaica! Wake up! It is time for us to look within ourselves and cultivate the gifts that God Almighty has endowed us with. Only then can a true democratic process begin, because democracy presupposes that the people are educated and wise enough to elect a government which is in their best interest.

Any real healing of our country must begin in the minds of our people. We must elevate our level of thinking in order to solve our problems. The Bible makes it very clear that 'as a man thinks in his heart, so is he'. If the true value of our women is not elevated in the minds of our men, then our women will continue to be abused by our men. So an awakened consciousness must take place on this island.

As our women prepare for the upcoming Million Woman March, let us come together as a unified body and think ahead in terms of what we want our children to inherit. Let us support our women for this cause.

I am, etc.,
