FIREFIGHTERS ARE yet to determine the cause of a fire that on Wednesday destroyed the Consumer Goods Limited on Orange Street in downtown Kingston.
Assistant Superintendent Jasper Campbell of the York Park Fire Station said it was also too early to give an estimate of the damage.
When The Gleaner visited the site, firemen were cooling down the smouldering remains of the building.
BLAZING FOR 12 HOURS
Corporal Courtney Brown of the York Park Fire Station said the firemen had been fighting the blaze for about 12 hours.
Davia Chin-Sang, managing director of Consumer Goods Limited, said she had been at the scene from approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday.
"I got a call from KingAlarm, the company that is responsible for the security of the building, at about 5:30 p.m. that there was a fire at the store," she said.
Ms. Ching-Sang, who has been in business there for more than 30 years, estimates that the stock she lost values about $9 million. The building, she said, was insured.
Four units from York Park and Rollington Town fire stations and a Rapid Response unit fought the blaze.
