St Catherine Chamber seeks solution to police salary impasse
published: Friday | July 29, 2005

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

THE ST. Catherine Chamber of Commerce says it is concerned about the current salary impasse between the Government and rank-and-file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

Dennis Robotham, president of the chamber, said the protracted period of waiting serves only to demotivate the members of the JCF who, he believes, would find it difficult to perform up to standard as they are unsure of how they will be paid. With this in mind, he said the chamber will be writing to the Ministry of Finance with the aim of finding a solution to the impasse.

BUSINESS COMMUNITY SUFFERS

He said that things cannot be allowed to continue along the current path as under such conditions, the business community suffers at the hands of criminals.

Mr. Robotham was speaking at a meeting convened by the chamber and which was attended by Superintendent Kenneth Wade of St. Catherine North police division. The chamber also used the meeting to thank Superintendent Wade and his men for the work that they have been doing in St. Catherine under trying circumstances. They promised to continue to support the police in this regard.

The president said that several new businesses that have opened in Spanish Town have refused to join the chamber, yet when there are problems, they are the first ones to seek the chamber's intervention.

He said that the time has come for a unified approach for all to benefit.
