IN RECOGNITION of the 'Generating Genius' programme, a cocktail reception was held at the Mona Visitor's Lodge on Tuesday. Those in attendance included the 20 boys who were selected to participate in the programme, representatives from the corporate sponsors - the Gleaner Company Limited and Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) - team members and coordinators of the camp, as well as also media personnel.
Professor Kenneth O. Hall, pro vice chancellor and Principal of the UWI Mona campus, welcomed the gathering and lauded the mastermind behind the project, Dr. Tony Sewell whom he invited to address the audience.
REASONS FOR PROJECT
Dr. Sewell gave a brief outline of his reasons for embarking on such a project, citing one as the onus on adults to spark the interest of boys and young men in research science. Dr. Sewell explained, "a quick fix" is not sufficient to achieve that ideal but an extensive programme, which needs patience to nurture the young minds." For that reason 'Generating Genius', he says, is slated to run five summers, ensuring that the development of those involved is an ongoing process.
Earl Jarrett of the JNBS spoke on behalf of his company, adding his share of commendations to the programme. The participating boys were invited to direct questions to Professor Hall. As expected, the questions reflected exceptionally perceptive thinking, showing that they were either budding geniuses, or geniuses in the making.
The event ended with mingling over punch and cocktails.
