Jamaicans warm up for Helsinki
published: Friday | July 29, 2005

SIMPSON

FIVE JAMAICANS will be out to sharpen their skills with less than two weeks to go before the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki when they face the starter at tomorrow's Bislett Games, the third TDK Golden League in Oslo, Norway.

National 400m champion Lansford Spence, who last competed at Central America and Caribbean Championships earlier this month, along with dethroned champion Brandon Simpson and Sanjay Ayre is down for the one-lap event.

In this race, American Tyree Washington will start favourite but should be hard pressed by the Jamaicans, all of whom ran sub-45 times at the National Championships in June.

Kenia Sinclair, the national record holder for the women's two-lap event, should continue her good form this season.

However, Sinclair, who recently became the first Jamaican woman to run under 1:59 minutes, will face stiff opposition from Russia's world leader Tatyana Adrianova (1:56.07) and Svetlana Cherkasova (1:56.93).

Other top Russians, Svetlana Klyuka (1:57.35) and Olga Kotlyarova (1:57.71), are also in the field.

In the women's triple jump, Trecia Smith (14.91m), third on the IAAF's top list this season, will face the world's second best jumper this year, Baya Rahouli of Algeria.
