Nickiesha Wilson - Ending season in fine style
published: Saturday | August 6, 2005

WILSON

NICKIESHA WILSON'S lone international title could not have come at a better time at her final junior meet.

She was overjoyed to end her junior career in style.

"I'm very happy. This was my aim and also the aim of my coach (Lennox Graham), so I'm very happy," Wilson said with a big smile.

The former Convent of Mercy Academy student closed with a timely run in the girls' 400m hurdles at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships in Windsor, Canada, upsetting two big guns, American Krystal Cantey (59.26) and compatriot Sherene Pinnock, who fell at the final hurdle, to win in 57.40 seconds.

HAPPY WITH WIN

Wilson, who in another week or so will choose between Louisiana State University (LSU) or University of Iowa, said she is happy for the win, but the time could have been better.

"I'm very satisfied ... because I won the gold medal," said Wilson who said the win also came as a gift just three days after her 19th birthday.

It was also a race full of drama as athletes fell from the first to final hurdle.

However, that did not affect Wilson although she felt bad for Pinnock.

"It didn't really affect me but I was really disappointed my teammate Sherene (Pinnock) fell," she said.

The Girls' Champs 400m hurdles winner, who has only represented Jamaica twice, listed winning at Champs and placing second at CARIFTA Games, along with Sunday's Pan Am run, as the highlights of her career.
