Pulse's Sexy Maxim and Victoria's Secret model Carla Campbell is now an Esquire covergirl.
In an extensive story in this month's issue, Esquire hails the world's 'four sexiest supermodels'.
Carla, selected for the cover, is clearly 'The One'.
Carla, who shot the cover in May this year, says though she has shot other covers, notably She and Smooth, she is especially pleased with her Esquire coup. "I'm not going to lie, this is the first cover I've got that I feel so proud of," she said, speaking from her apartment in New York. "Esquire is a step further and I'm very, very ecstatic right now," she said.
elation
Her elation is understandable. Esquire is a very highly regarded men's magazine. Their August cover will undoubtedly make her more visible internationally.
"I'm keeping my fingers crossed that other things will happen as a result of this cover, because this cover is a big, big thing," she said.
Carla has long been a catwalk favourite locally for her curvaceous body and sex appeal. That sex appeal has also found favour with readers of FHM and Maxim magazines, in which Carla has been regularly featured. She has also starred in a music video for R&B artiste Joe and lately appeared in Common's Go video as well. She became the Caribbean's second model (after Jaunel McKenzie) to do Victoria's Secret.
Carla said this sexy image is not something she at first aspired to, but it is one she has come to accept.
"I did not go for it. It just happened. Someone said 'let's put her in some skimpy bathing suits' and next thing you know you're a sex goddess," she explained.
However, Carl hopes to parlay that image into a career-making campaign. Buoyed by personal motivation and local and international press predictions, Carla is working towards becoming the next Victoria's Secret worldwide campaign model.
equipped to replace Tyra
JC Report, a leading international online fashion magazine, reported after seeing Campbell at Caribbean Fashionweek "the lusty Carla Campbell, already shot for the cover of Esquire and regularly featured in the pages of Maxim and FHM, is well-equipped to replace Tyra after her last catwalk appearance for Victoria's Secret this fall."
"I certainly agree with them," said Carla after learning of the prediction. "It's something that we're working on right now."
"Definitely that is what I want. That is what all of my work is gearing towards," she said.
There is one honour for which Carla will not have to work much harder, or much longer, though. At the finals of the Caribbean Model Search on August 20, Carla will be the 11th inductee into Pulse's Fashion and Beauty Hall Of Fame. She will join other inductees Kimberley Mais, Angela Neil and Sandra Foster (1990); Lois Samuels, Althea Laing and Lisa Hanna (1995); Romae Gordon and Nikki Vassell (2001); Nadine Willis (2003) and Jaunel McKenzie (2004).
She said of Pulse's plans for her Hall of Fame induction, "I am very delighted to accept this honour. Of course, with all my hard work and dedication, I am reaping fruitful rewards. I always quote in my e-mails 'keep the faith'. That is something I strongly believe in and live by on a daily basis."
Pulse CEO Kingsley Cooper, in a press release, expressed confidence in Carla's talents. "We felt that Carla could be one of the world's top talents, so we helped her to reinvent herself late last year. This led to her signing with IMG, the world's leading agency. This was exactly what we wanted. The result is there to be seen. We congratulate her for her commitment and success and thank IMG for partnering with us in the management of her New York business."
Carla's Esquire cover makes 10 major magazine covers for Pulse models since the start of the year. Other covers have been Nell Robinson's ARENA, Jaunel's French FQ and Sunday Times, Sunna's Cosmo and Nadine's Aspire, Sunday Times and Pride.
