Barbados trample Jamaica
published: Friday | August 12, 2005

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent (CMC):

BARBADOS SCORED a comprehensive nine-wicket win over defending champions Jamaica yesterday at the Arnos Vale 'A' Ground, to reach the final of the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge.

Resuming the day 75 for four, Jamaica were dismissed for 150 and Barbados easily scored the 45 runs required for victory with the loss of just one wicket.

It was a good comeback by the Barbadians who had lost their previous game to Guyana by an innings and 12 runs.

"The fellows really played to their true potential," Dexter Toppin, Barbados' coach, told CMC Sports.

REMARKABLE WIN

"It is nice to see that the fellows could bounce back from a disaster in the game against the Guyana team and put it together here against Jamaica."

Toppin said the victory was even more remarkable, taking into consideration that Barbados were without the services of their regular captain and most experienced batsman Nicholas Squires, along with leading batsman Shamarh Brooks.

Jamaica resumed yesterday still needing a further 31 to avoid an innings defeat but lost wicket-keeper/batsman Jeffrey Scott in the second over from Javon Searles, lbw for five to slip further into trouble.

Albert Gopie struck a fighting unbeaten 56 which kept Barbados at bay for some while and shared a stubborn 26-run, sixth wicket partnership with Andre McCarthy, who scored 12.

Once that partnership was broken, the innings folded as Gopie ran out of partners. All told, he batted for 226 minutes and struck three fours and one six.

At Arnos Vale 'B', the Leeward Islands drew with the Windward Islands on the third day of their final round Tcross-zone match.

Set 260 to win, the Leewards reached 187 for nine in their second innings at the close. Earlier, the Windward Islands, resuming at 121 for five in their second innings, were dismissed for 145.

SCORES: WINDWARDS 261 (Ronald Etienne 65, Andre Fletcher 64, Heron Campbell 48, Donwell Hector 26, Dalton Polius 16; Chad Hampson 3-27) & 145 (Earven Fredericks 26, Donwell Hector 21; Justin Athanaze 3-21, Dillon Skellekie 3-35, Chad Hampson 2-15). LEEWARDS 147 (Javal Hodge 34, Dillon Skellekie 30, Javia Liburd 28; Haniff Alexander 4-36, Kevin James 3-24) & 187-9 (Javia Liburd 65, O. Peters 16, Alan Powell 14; Earven Fredericks 3-17, Haniff Alexander 3-41, Nelon Pascal 2-38).

At Sion Hill, Trinidad and Tobago beat Guyana by 127 runs in their Zone B match. Set 196 to win, Guyana were bowled out for 68 shortly after tea.

Earlier, T&T, resuming from 170 for nine, were dismissed for 186 in their second innings.

SCORES: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO 133 (Kieron Pollard 74, Sunil Narine 17; David Wallace 4-14, Jeremy Gordon 3-15) & 186 (Marlon Barclay 45, Rishi Bachan 43, Kieron Pollard 26; Jason Sripal 6-51, Ryan Hercules 3-30). GUYANA 124 (Richard Ramdeen 43, Gajanand Singh 38; Dane Teelucksingh 6-31) & 68 (Jason Sripal 24 not out; Sunil Narine 5-14, Rishi Bachan 4-8).
