Police stations like junk yards
published: Wednesday | August 17, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

SEVERAL MONTHS ago I penned a letter to your widely-read paper concerning the condition of the New Kingston police post and challenged the powers that be to get on the ball with refurbishing it for the men and women who work there tirelessly on a daily basis.

Up to the date of this letter, August 14, nothing has been done, and the situation remains. But this police post is not the only one in dire need of repairs.

I was appalled recently to see the condition of the Stony Hill police station. This structure is a disgrace for a prominent community like that. The place is like a junk yard. The compound of the Half-Way Tree police station is also like junk yard. All it needs now is a barking dog.

I was there recently to do business and I had to park across the road in a plaza because there was no where on the station compound to park my car.

Dr. Peter Phillips, the Minister of National Security, needs to do a better job. All the TV appearances and soundbites are no comfort to the men and women of the department.

No wonder there is so much unrest in the Police Department today - morale is at an all-time low.

The Commissioner of Police has been given a basket to carry water because he has his hands full with the alleged corruption and the dilapidated conditions all around him.

I am, etc.,

CASWELL ISAACS
