Landowners stymie Claremont ' s growth
published: Saturday | August 20, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It has become a great problem for business expansion in this little town of Claremont, St. Ann. Scores of our youths are sitting on walls and on shop piazzas daily doing nothing.

What is it that expands a community?

Housing developments, growth in business, education of our youths, clean environment for our senior citizens and employment opportunities.

All the above mention are possible for this community, but there is one big problem and that is landowners. For one reason or another many have refused to sell pieces of their valued properties.

concerned citizen

As a businessman and a pastor in the community for some 50 years, I am concerned not only with the spiritual life of humanity but also with their physical and social well-being.

For example, I approached the councillor regarding the old, dilapidated Carvallo School for the establishment of my furniture business, and I was told its purpose was for a tourist attraction. Yet it remains untouched.
People interested in setting up businesses such as car sales and rentals can forget it, as there is no space for this as well as other well needed business opportunities. All those acres of land stretching from the service station both sides of the road to Golden Spring could be sold or leased for housing schemes. Very shortly there will be no cemetery to bury our dead in Claremont. The present one is bursting at the seams.

We should remember "we brought nothing into this world and it is certain we can take nothing out".What about a housing scheme at Prosper Hall to join the newly established farm? These developments would allow the community to come right on the front page. Remember we can take nothing out!

I am, etc.,

Concerned Pastor
