THREE JAMAICANS have been included in a 20-member West Indies Under-19 squad selected to prepare for the International Cricket Council (ICC) age group World Cup scheduled for Sri Lanka in February next year.
The players are legspinner Alton Beckford and batsmen Zaniffe Fowler and Andre McCarthy.
Beckford, a St. Elizabeth Technical student, was a beacon of light for the Jamaicans who lost their three-day title and failed to get past the semi-finals in the one-day competition. He captured 25 wickets in the three-dayers, including four five-wickets hauls. Beckford also had a five-wicket haul in the limited overs where he bagged a total of six wickets in two games.
McCarthy, the Holmwood Technical batsman whose aim was to score two centuries at the tournament, did not come close to achieving that goal.
However, he was one of three Jamaicans to register a half century on tour. The 18-year-old was responsible for Jamaica's victory over Guyana in the third place play-off as he not only score a brilliant 56 but he bagged five second innings wickets.
HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL SCORER
His compatriot, Fowler, who attends STETHS, was Jamaica's highest individual scorer in a game with 64 runs in the first innings of the tour opener against Trinidad and Tobago.
Meanwhile, double champions Trinidad and Tobago have five players in the squad. They include spinners Sunil Narine and Rishi Bachan who were at the centre of Trinidad and Tobago's success in the three-day and limited-overs competitions.
Bachan, a left-arm spinner, grabbed 25 wickets in the
three-day tournament while his counterpart Narine, an offspinner, snared 33 wickets to lead Trinidad's bowling attack.
They are joined in the team by all-rounder Jason Mohammed and batsmen William Perkins and Kieron Pollard.
Talented off spinning all-rounder Shamarh Brooks, along with the fast bowling duo of Kemar Roach and Jevon Searles, were named from two-time losing finalists Barbados.
Guyana's Leon Johnson, who scored the tournament's only double century, was also chosen.
The squad: Shamarh Brooks, Kemar Roach, Jevon Searles (Barbados); Jeremy Gordon, Leon Johnson, Richard Ramdeen, Gajanand Singh (Guyana); Alton Beckford, Zaniffe Fowler, Andre McCarthy (Jamaica); Javier Liburd, Kieron Powell (Leewards); Rishi Bachan, Jason Mohammed, Sunil Narine, William Perkins, Kieron Pollard (Trinidad); Heron Campbell, Andre Fletcher, Nelon Pascal (Windwards).
