JAMAICA'S CHANCES of making it to next year's World Volleyball Championships in Japan received a major blow when they went down 3-1 to unranked Guatemala at the Oscar Gobaira Sports Complex in the Dominican Republic yesterday.
The loss to Guatemala now puts the Riddim Girls out of synch as they were one of the teams they were deemed to have a good chance of beating, along with No. 31 ranked Costa Rica.
For the team to progress they must place at least third in five-team Zone E and with the Cuba team ranked at fifth in the world and the Dominican team at 13, the loss to Guatemala puts the Girls between a rock and a hard place.
After losing the first set 25-10 to Guatemala yesterday, the Jamaicans rallied to take a very close second set 25-21 but the Central Americans proved to be too strong as they won the third 25-20 and then went on to crush the Jamaican team 25-7 in the final set
The Jamaicans have no time to rebound as they will be thrown in the lion's den when they face the might of Cuba today. They will then meet the Dominican Republic tomorrow and close out the tournament when they play Costa Rica on Saturday.
