Rodney Davis - A fanatic about his children
published: Monday | August 29, 2005

Rodney Davis - WINSTON SILL/FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER

MEET THE new President/CEO of Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited. He is Rodney Davis, a 38 year old father of four who first tasted the responsibility of having to care for a child at age 19. The experience of caring for her financially and in every other way has taught him to accept responsibilities on the job and in all areas of his life.

In an interview with Flair, Mr. Davis describes himself as having been born to be a father. "I am a fanatic about my children; I have two young boys and another girl, my oldest is in college - as a matter of fact, I have two hobbies, my children and golf," he said, revealing that he has a 20 handicap.

One of the things that has given him the biggest thrill happened with, not surprisingly - one of his children. The words from one of his children that has touched him most were the words of wisdom he shared with his eldest when she was five and which she never uttered again until at age 10, when she gave a speech at school.

"I was moved and gratified that she remembered them," he said.

GOD'S MESSAGE

Mr. Davis was brought up Catholic but is now non-denominational and will go where he can hear God's message. "If God is in your message I will hear it."

Like most Jamaicans, he loves curried goat and escoveitched fish and he also cooks a mean blackened chicken with lemon butter drizzled on it.

His favourite spot in Jamaica is Frenchman's Cove in Portland.

Although he is a corporate animal, Mr. Davis also runs the most successful chain of black barber shops in Toronto where he resided since he was four years old.

Mr. Davis holds a Bachelor of Business Management Degree from Ryerson University and is a chartered accountant from the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA, ICAO).

He has held various executive positions including: senior consultant, chief executive officer, project manager, director of finance, corporate controller, director of corporate finance and chief financial officer. And he has worked with City Newspapers and New Media Maxxcom Inc., Earnst & Young, Jamaica and KPMG-Peat Marwick Thorne, Toronto, Ontario.
