FOR MOST men their choice of socks is the most insignificant part of getting dressed. Once they're clean, they just throw them on thinking they are hidden under the pants so no big deal. Wrong.

Sandra Samuels of Totally Male in Island Life Shopping Centre, notes that the objective is for the complete outfit to flow from head to toe.

When purchasing socks, she recommends that the following be kept in mind; occasion, fabric/texture, size, style, length and colour.

MATCH SOCKS WITH PANTS

The number one rule: try to match socks as closely as possible with pants. When that is not possible select a colour closest to the shoe.

The socks should also be long enough so that if the legs are crossed, no skin or part of the leg is visible. Choose cotton blends or light wool for hot climates such as Jamaica's so that the feet and toes can still breathe.

Change your socks every day and if you have athlete's foot, place a little powder between toes to prevent moisture.

Types of socks

Silk socks -- The more formal the attire, the finer, smoother and plainer the socks should be. Therefore for formal or black tie attire (such as tuxedos) silk sock are the best choice.

Argyle--These socks have a sporty feel because of their diamond motif. They are perfect for casual occasions and to be worn with sports jackets.

Bird's eye--Socks with tiny dots packed closely together that resembles the eyes of birds. These are perfect for plain suits or suits with patterns.

Clocks--Single embroidered designs on the sides. These types of socks will never look stylish with sports coats or odd trousers.

Dots-- This pattern creates the same effect as the birds eye. A great way to co-ordinate dots is to play with the lighter colours on the dots.

Plain-- These weaves are not not ribbed or textured. This is a versatile sock that can be worn with nearly all types of suits or casual clothes.

So gentlemen, remember white bobby socks with dress shoes are a fashion criminal offence deserving of severe punishment. And now that you have the basics of how to co-ordinate socks with the rest of your outfit, next time you get dressed sock 'em good!

CORRECT WAY TO STORE SOCKS

Stuffing your socks into each other is not the correct way to store them. This stretches out the top making the fit inappropriate and unsightly. Correct way to store socks is to roll from bottom up.
