Silvera CASTRO, always willing to help others
published: Monday | August 29, 2005

Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

Silvera Castro - NORMAN GRINDLEY/DEPUTY CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER.

"WELL DESERVED," are the words that emanate from the lips of persons who know Silvera Castro, at the news he will receive the Order of Distinction (OD) on Heroes' Day for community service.

He humbly accepts the award crediting the support of family and Carib Cement management. Considering how much he has done, 'well deserved' might not capture the essence. Mr. Castro has served on the board of over 10 schools including his alma mater St. Andrew Technical High School for which he is still chairman; first past student to achieve that.

"It all began with my mother who instilled in me the importance of a good education. Coming from a poor background, I wanted to give something back to the community," he reasoned as his motivation. He has also been known to pay tuition fees for needy students.

This is the third in our series of highlights on persons nominated for this year's Heroes' Day honours and awards. This week's Flair Men's Issue, turns the spotlight on a good Samaritan.
