Portia, Omar dismiss alliance
published: Monday | August 29, 2005

PEOPLE'S NATIONAL Party (PNP) presidential candidates Portia Simpson Miller and Dr. Omar Davies yesterday dismissed suggestions of an alliance for the PNP top post.

Yesterday, Mrs. Simpson Miller told The Gleaner she clearly supported Dr. Davies to be re-elected the party's Region Three chairman. He amassed 616 votes to defeat Dr. Jephthah Ford by 366 votes.

Mrs. Simpson Miller's supporters openly wore T-shirts and buttons bearing Dr. Davies' image.

"Today I have to support my colleague," she said. "The unity of the party is more important than anything else."

GOING IT ALONE

But Mrs. Simpson Miller stated that she was "going it alone" for the PNP presidency. "After Team Portia delivers Omar as Regional chairman, we are back on the road as Team Portia," she stated.

Dr. Davies also confirmed that Mrs. Simpson Miller's support for him ended yesterday.

"This (Portia support) is about Region Three chairmanship," he said after his victory at St. George's College in central Kingston.

On arrival at the regional conference yesterday, Dr. Peter Phillips, another PNP presidential candidate, said he didn't have a favourite for the regional chairmanship.

"I am neutral in this contest," he said. "I think every delegate should vote how they want to vote."

Meanwhile, from early as noon yesterday, it was evident that delegates wanted to give Dr. Davies a third term in office.

Nearly every T-shirt bore his image. Several orange-clad women also turned buttons with his image into earrings.
