Breese's whirlwind 47 aids Durham demolition
published: Monday | August 29, 2005

BREESE

CHESTER-LE-STREET, Durham, CMC:

JAMAICAN ALL-ROUNDER Gareth Breese was a prominent performer for Durham yesterday as they logged an easy win over Scotland in England National league Division Two limited overs competition at Riverside Ground.

Breese grabbed two wickets and scored a fiery 47 as Durham won by 93 runs in their home fixture.

Sent to bat, Durham made 227 for seven off 45 overs and Scotland replied with 135 all out off 35.2 overs.

Gordon Muchall, with 79 off 84 balls and Breese, were the key scorers in Durham's total.

Muchall hit 79, including eight fours and a six and Breese's 47 came off only 39 balls and contained four fours and two sixes.

Medium pacer Ryan Watson took four for 36 for Scotland and then provided the only real resistance to Durham's bowling attack with an impressive 86.

Breese, who captured two for 33 off 4.2 overs, Brad Williams (2-34) and Liam Plunkett (2-26) shared six wickets and pushed Durham to their comfortable win.

The Division One title was decided when Essex posted a 12-run win over Hampshire to claim championship honours.

In two four-day County Championship matches that ended yesterday, Glamorgan defeated Ramnaresh Sarwan's Gloucestershire, and Worcestershire, with Chris Gayle lost to Lancashire.

Glamorgan whipped Gloucestershire by 322 runs at Bristol where Gloucestershire were bowled out for 217 after being set 540 to win.

West Indies batsman Sarwan, in his first month with the club, failed to score in the first innings, made 54 in the second innings and had a second innings bowling effort of two for 38 off 18 overs.

At Blackpool, West Indies opening batsman Gayle - on his County (four-day) Championship debut - tasted defeat with his new club Worcestershire, as Lancashire beat them by an innings and 73 runs.

Gayle, who lashed a 25-ball 43 in the first innings, scored only eight in the second innings and Worcestershire slumped to 113 all out yesterday morning to lose by an innings and 73 runs.
